OnGuard is probably the most-asked-about oil in my routine. People recognize it by the distinctive bottle and the warm, spicy aroma. But what makes it different from just reaching for generic wellness products? The blend, the quality, and how doTERRA combines these specific oils into something that feels purposeful rather than accidental.
Let me walk you through everything β the what, the why, and the how β so you understand not just how to use it, but why it matters.
"OnGuard isn't a one-trick oil. It's a thoughtfully formulated blend of six powerful oils that work better together than any of them would alone."
What's actually in OnGuard?
OnGuard contains six essential oils: Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Rosemary, and Frankincense. Each brings something different to the blend.
How I use OnGuard daily
Morning diffuser (3β4 drops)
I start my day with OnGuard diffusing in my home office. The aroma is grounding without being overwhelming, and it sets the tone for the day ahead. I especially do this during seasonal transitions or when I've been around a lot of people.
Topical on wrists (1β2 drops diluted)
Before heading out, I apply a diluted drop of OnGuard to my wrists using Fractionated Coconut Oil. This keeps the aroma close throughout the day and is a personal reminder of my wellness intentions.
OnGuard Softgels for on-the-go
On busy days or when I'm traveling, the OnGuard Softgels are my go-to. Easy, portable, and I know exactly what I'm getting in each capsule. I keep a bottle in my bag year-round.
During seasonal changes (increased usage)
When the seasons shift or I'm around more people than usual, I increase my OnGuard routine. More frequent diffusing, more consistent topical application, and daily softgels become part of my regular practice.

Why CPTG matters for OnGuard
OnGuard is one of those blends where quality is everything. Each of the six oils in the formula needs to be pure, potent, and properly tested. That's what CPTG (Certified Pure Tested Grade) means.
doTERRA's CPTG standard involves third-party testing at multiple stages β it's not a marketing claim, it's a documented process. For a blend like OnGuard, that rigor matters because you're relying on the synergy of six oils working together. If even one is diluted, contaminated, or mislabeled, the whole thing changes.
I don't use OnGuard from anywhere else because I genuinely trust this standard in a way I don't with other brands.
Dilution: OnGuard is potent. Always dilute with Fractionated Coconut Oil before applying to skin β never apply undiluted. A 1β2% dilution (1 drop per teaspoon of carrier) is appropriate. Do not ingest the pure oil β use OnGuard Softgels for internal use instead. OnGuard is for adults and children 6+ when used as directed. Avoid during pregnancy without consulting a healthcare provider.
