Sleep is the single highest-leverage wellness habit there is. I've seen it affect mood, digestion, energy, skin — everything downstream improves when sleep improves. So when I recommend a starting point for any new oil user, it almost always begins here.
Here are the five oils I return to again and again, and the exact way I sequence them for an evening routine. None of this is medical advice — these are the personal practices that have made a real difference in my own routine and in the people I've shared them with.
"The sequencing is the part most people skip — and it's the part that makes it actually work."
The five oils
Each of these plays a different role in the routine. Think of them as working together rather than as standalone options.
The sequencing — why order matters
Most people grab one oil, diffuse it, and don't notice much. The reason the stack works better is that each oil builds on what came before — grounding the nervous system in stages rather than trying to flip a switch.
30 minutes before bed — Cedarwood (diffuser)
Start the transition early. 3–4 drops in a diffuser while you wind down, dim lights, or prepare for the evening. Cedarwood sets the tone before you even get to bed.
15 minutes before bed — Vetiver (topical, back of neck)
One drop of Vetiver diluted in a small amount of Fractionated Coconut Oil, applied to the back of the neck. This is the grounding anchor — deep and earthy. Don't skip this step.
At bedtime — Serenity Blend (diffuser) + Lavender (topical)
Swap the diffuser to Serenity (2–3 drops) and add a drop of Lavender to each wrist. The Serenity continues building the atmosphere while the Lavender provides close-range, personal scent.
If needed — Roman Chamomile (temples, diluted)
For nights when thoughts are racing. One drop diluted on the temples or behind the ears. This is an optional step — you may not need it every night once the base routine is established.
Always dilute topical applications — especially Vetiver and Roman Chamomile — with Fractionated Coconut Oil before applying to skin. A 1–2% dilution (1 drop per teaspoon of carrier) is appropriate for adults. Avoid applying undiluted oils to sensitive areas.
Building the habit
The first week of any new routine rarely feels transformative. Give it two full weeks of consistency before evaluating. The oils respond to regular use — your body learns the cues and the wind-down begins earlier each night as the habit deepens.
I also find that pairing this routine with a consistent bedtime (even on weekends), dimmed lights after 9pm, and no screens in the bedroom makes the oils noticeably more effective. They're part of the environment, not a standalone fix.
Shop the stack
All five oils are available through my doTERRA storefront. If you're starting fresh, Cedarwood and Lavender are the best first purchase — they handle the majority of the work in this routine and have dozens of other uses throughout the day.
